1. Install a Balance Tank

  • Purpose:
    A balance tank equalises flow surges by holding excess sewage during peak periods and gradually releasing it to the treatment system.

  • Features:

    • Capacity: Sized for at least 12 hours of storage based on daily flow rates.

    • Pumps: Equipped with two pumps (primary and backup), controlled by timers rather than level sensors.

    • Operation:

      • Regular, timed pumping ensures even flow to the treatment plant.

      • During peak periods (mornings, evenings, or events), the tank fills and gradually pumps down during quieter periods (e.g., overnight).

      • If the tank reaches capacity, a high-level float activates both pumps to quickly manage excess flow.
