What maintenance is required on a surface water attenuation, infiltration or SuDS system?</a>
Customer Question:
What maintenance is required on a surface water attenuation, infiltration, or SuDS system?
Overview
Maintenance of surface water systems is a critical topic, especially when local authorities may inherit the responsibility. To address this, BMS has developed innovative methods to make attenuation, infiltration, and SuDS systems essentially maintenance-free.
Maintenance-Free Solutions by BMS
1. BMS Drainmax Tunnel System
Isolator Row:
A designated isolator row is surrounded by permeable geotextile with a MacTex liner at the base.
Water infiltrates out via the 52 slotted holes per tunnel, while solids are contained within the isolator row.
Maintenance Process:
Solids can be jet-washed from the isolator row and flushed to the outlet manhole if required.
Enhanced Maintenance-Free Design:
Combining the Drainmax system with:
BMS Petrol/Oil Interceptor upstream.
BMS Stormbreaker Defender (vortex silt/oil/debris separator) downstream.
This setup reduces maintenance to periodic emptying of the interceptor and Defender.
An oil level alarm can alert when the interceptor needs emptying.
2. BMS Stormbreaker System
Innovative Design:
A perforated distribution pipe is placed on the liner base and wrapped in a permeable geotextile.
Covered with 200 mm of clean stone, forming part of the storage volume.
The Stormbreaker system is assembled on top.
Maintenance Process:
Solids are confined to the perforated pipe, which can be jet-washed if required.
Solids are flushed to the outlet manhole, leaving the Stormbreaker crates free of debris.
Enhanced Maintenance-Free Design:
Combined with a BMS Petrol/Oil Interceptor upstream and a BMS Stormbreaker Defender downstream, this setup minimizes maintenance to emptying the interceptor and Defender.
Advantages of BMS Systems
Reduced Maintenance:
Maintenance is confined to inlet/outlet manholes, the isolator row, or the distribution pipe.
Maintenance frequency is reduced with the integration of interceptors and silt/oil/debris separators.
Ease of Cleaning:
Jet-washing is effective for clearing debris.
Systems are designed to contain solids in accessible areas.
Durability:
Systems are robust and designed for heavy loads, ensuring long-term reliability.
Monitoring:
Oil level alarms in interceptors provide proactive alerts for emptying.
BMS offers two innovative systems for surface water attenuation and infiltration:
-
Utilizes an isolator row to confine solids and facilitate easy maintenance.
-
Uses a perforated pipe and clean stone base to prevent debris from entering the main system.
By combining these solutions with additional interceptors and separators, maintenance requirements are reduced to periodic checks and minor emptying tasks.
