Case Study on the Installation of Cost Effective Drainmax Surface Water Infiltration Tank in Sports Club

Project Overview:

BMS worked with GMCS Construction to design, install and certify a value engineered 575 m3 capacity surface water infiltration system using BMS Drainmax Tunnels in a new Sports Facility in Clonsilla, Dublin 15, Ireland.

BMS worked with our client on a design that minimised upfront while maintaining performance and quality. Despite difficult excavation conditions, the system was installed efficiently to meet programme demands.

BRIEF

Design, supply, install, and certify a BMS Drainmax Tunnel surface water infiltration system with a total capacity of 575 m³ (575,000 L) across two tanks. The project required a strong focus on cost efficiency, while overcoming challenging site conditions, including a hard rock layer beneath the subsoil.

BMS also supplied a 6 l/s BMS Stormbrake Outlet Flow Control.

VALUE

€30,000 +

GMCS Construction, a leading contractor in residential developments, was delivering a new high-specification sporting facility and grounds in Clonsilla, Dublin 15. Having worked with BMS previously, they engaged BMS to develop a tailored surface water infiltration solution that would meet both budgetary and technical requirements.

The design remit was as follows:

  1. A strong focus on reducing upfront costs while maintaining system performance.

  2. Full turnkey delivery from design through to installation and certification.

  3. Preparation of detailed design drawings for approval by the client and the relevant local authority

  4. A design that allowed for rapid installation despite restricted access and difficult ground conditions.

Inclusion of BMS Isolator Row Technology to create an essentially maintenance-free system, alongside a BMS Petrol/Oil Interceptor

Solution & Delivery:

BMS worked closely with GMCS Construction to achieve all project objectives:

  • The final design optimised the use of stone within the system to contribute to storage volume and reducing overall costs while maintaining required capacity.

  • The system was split across two tanks to suit site layout and construction sequencing.

  • BMS conducted detailed hydrographical analysis and surface water runoff calculations using specialist in-house software, enabling a fully bespoke design from first principles.

  • Multiple design iterations were developed in collaboration with the client and approved by the project engineers and local authority.

  • Excavation works were particularly challenging due to a hard rock layer encountered just below subsoil, requiring careful management to maintain programme timelines.

  • Despite these constraints, BMS successfully installed and certified the system within a tight timeframe, ensuring minimal disruption to the overall construction schedule.

  • BMS incorporated its Isolator Row Technology to prevent silt build-up, ensuring long-term performance with minimal maintenance requirements.

  • BMS can offer a ‘one stop shop’ for all surface water requirements.  In this case BMS also supplied a BMS 6 l/s BMS Stormbrake Outlet Flow Control.

Operation/Maintenance Details:

BMS Drainmax installations are designed to be maintenance free, which is an important consideration considering the 50 year lifespan of most attenuation systems.  More details can be found in the Drainmax DIBT Certificate or by contacting BMS

Why choose Drainmax for your next project?

  • Ease of Installation: Lightweight tunnels (32 kg) can be lifted by two people and simply overlap for quick assembly—no complex connections required.

  • Superior Value: The system integrates clean stone into the storage calculations, maximising volume while minimising costs.

  • Maintenance-Free Options: Our R&D team developed a unique "Isolator Row" that captures grit and silt at the inlet for easy maintenance via jet washing. This is a key consideration for planning authorities.

  • Certified Strength: DIBT certified for structural integrity, supporting axial loadings of up to 10 tonnes.

BMS can offer a ‘one stop shop’ for all surface water requirements including attenuationinfiltrationinterceptorsvortex oil/silt separatorsstormbrakes and holding tanks from design right through to installation and certification. BMS have an unrivalled 40 years of experience manufacturing and installing surface water and wastewater management systems in Ireland, the UK and 60+ countries around the world.
