Case Study on the Installation of a Bespoke Drainmax Surface Water Infiltration Tank at a Housing Estate

Project Overview:

BMS worked with Donlon Civil and Building Services to design, install and certify a bespoke/customised 70 m3 capacity surface water infiltration system using BMS Drainmax Tunnels at a housing estate in Co. Sligo, Ireland.

After a site visit by BMS is became clear that there were a number of challenges to be overcome.  It was an existing compact site, in close proximity to trees/houses, with a pre-existing inlet/outlet and very small falls across the site.  There were also hydrant points in the middle of the available installation area.  BMS innovated a solution where the infiltration tank was split in two, either side of the hydrants, with a Petrol/Oil Interceptor installed in the middle.

The Case Study highlights BMS Design expertise when designing surface water management solutions.

BRIEF

Design, supply, install and certify a BMS Drainmax Tunnel surface water infiltration system with a total capacity of 70 m³ (105,000 L).  The project was a challenging one, due to existing an existing inlet/outlet, limited space, hydrant points in the installation area and very low cross falls available.  BMS used all of its 40 years of worldwide experience to innovate a bespoke/customised design that enable the installation even with all the site constraints.

BMS also supplied a 3 l/s BMS Stormbrake Outlet Flow Control and an NSBP04 Class 1 Bypass Petrol/Oil Interceptor.

Donlon Civil & Building Services is a leading family owned contractor based in Sligo who were founded in 1980.  They contacted BMS for assistance on the design, supply and installation of a challenging surface water infiltration site at a new housing development they were constructing in Sligo.

The design remit was as follows:

Work with an existing inlet/outlet where the infiltration tank would be installed.  This was in the middle of the installation area.  The Petrol/Oil Interceptor also has to be installed at this point.

  1. Work with very low crossfalls at the site, which were already in place.

  2. The installation area was limited and confined by housing on one side and mature trees on the other. Full turnkey delivery from design through to installation and certification.

  3. Hydrant access points were also already in the installation area.

  4. Preparation of detailed design drawings for approval by the client and the relevant local authority.

  5. A design that allowed for rapid installation despite restricted access and difficult ground conditions.

  6. Inclusion of BMS Isolator Row Technology to create an essentially maintenance-free system, alongside a BMS Petrol/Oil Interceptor.

Solution & Delivery:

BMS worked closely with Donlon Civil & Building Services to achieve all project objectives:

  • An innovative bespoke design was devised, where the tank was split in two, either side of the existing inlet/outlet with BMS Petrol/Oil Interceptor installed in the middle of tank alongside the fire hydrant points.  This was all achieved within the designated limited space and with low crossfalls available.

  • BMS conducted detailed hydrographical analysis and surface water runoff calculations using specialist in-house software, enabling a fully bespoke design from first principles.

  • A number of design iterations were developed in collaboration with the client and approved by the project engineers and local authority.

  • Despite these constraints, BMS successfully installed and certified the system within a tight timeframe, ensuring minimal disruption to the overall construction schedule.

  • BMS incorporated its Isolator Row Technology to prevent silt build-up, ensuring long-term performance with minimal maintenance requirements.

  • BMS can offer a ‘one stop shop’ for all surface water requirementsIn this case BMS also supplied a 3 l/s BMS Stormbrake Outlet Flow Control and                             an NSBP04 Class 1 Bypass Petrol/Oil Interceptor.

This Case Study showcases that BMS are a full service manufacturer.  We believe that all projects start with great design and always aim to provide the best overall value rather than the cheapest price.  Many suppliers in the market sell completely on price and will only provide minimal design/back up especially after the installation is complete. BMS maintain files on all our installations since 1986 as part of our ISO 9001 Quality System.

BMS have been designed, manufacturing and supplied water and wastewater treatment systems from our HQ in Longford, Ireland for 40 years, with product in 60+ countries worldwide.

We provide a reliable quality solution that is built to last right through from design to installation and maintenance/spare parts that is also great overall value.

Operation/Maintenance Details:

BMS Drainmax installations are designed to be maintenance free, which is an important consideration considering the 50 year lifespan of most attenuation systems.  More details can be found in the Drainmax DIBT Certificate or by contacting BMS

Why choose Drainmax for your next project?

  • Ease of Installation: Lightweight tunnels (32 kg) can be lifted by two people and simply overlap for quick assembly—no complex connections required.

  • Superior Value: The system integrates clean stone into the storage calculations, maximising volume while minimising costs.

  • Maintenance-Free Options: Our R&D team developed a unique "Isolator Row" that captures grit and silt at the inlet for easy maintenance via jet washing. This is a key consideration for planning authorities.

  • Certified Strength: DIBT certified for structural integrity, supporting axial loadings of up to 10 tonnes.

BMS can offer a ‘one stop shop’ for all surface water requirements including attenuationinfiltrationinterceptorsvortex oil/silt separatorsstormbrakes and holding tanks from design right through to installation and certification. BMS have an unrivalled 40 years of experience manufacturing and installing surface water and wastewater management systems in Ireland, the UK and 60+ countries around the world.
