Case Study on the Design & Manufacture of Large Vortex Separator

Project Overview:

The Mater Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Ireland. FIMA Developments was the main Groundworks Contractor on the project for the main contractor, John Sisk and Sons Ltd.

The BMS Stormbreaker Defender Vortex Silt/Oil/Debris Separator proved an ideal solution for the project to remove any oil/silt/debris before the surface water flowed into an existing on site attenuation system.

BMS unsurpassed ability to custom manufacture large tanks allowed the design and manufacture of a very large vortex silt/oil separator for flows of up to 250 l/s. The 250 l/s Stormbreaker Defender involved transport in the early hours of the morning as an oversized load with an escort.

BRIEF

FIMA Developments were the main groundworks contractors during a major redevelopment of the Mater Hospital, Dublin.  Part of the upgrade involved installing a new car park.  FIMA needed a solution that could remove silt/oil from a large surface water flow of up to 250 l/s before connecting it to an existing on site attenuation system.

VALUE

€15,000 +

FIMA Developments are one of Irelands leading civil engineering/construction contractors and were working on the extension to the Mater Hospital, Dublin (one of Ireland Largest Hospitals) with the main contractors Sisk. They required a very large vortex separator to remove silt/oil/debris upstream of an attenuation tank. The maximum flow was 250 l/s. Therefore BMS innovated the design and manufacture of a for a very large BMS Stormbreaker Defender Vortex Separator. The Defender can be used upstream and downstream of flows to remove silt/oil/debris/trash before discharge into receiving waters.

The design remit was as follows:

  1. To design a vortex separator that could deal with flows of up to 250 l/s and remove silt/oil/debris.

  2. To manufacture it in rot/corrosion proof GRP/Fibreglass.

  3. Full quality and manufacturing oversight via BMS ISO 9001 Quality Management System.

  4. Preparation of detailed design drawings for approval by the client and the relevant local authority

  5. Design and supply a Petrol/Oil Interceptor and a Stormbrake Outlet Flow Control as part of BMS Surface Water ‘One Stop Shop’.

Solution & Delivery:

BMS worked closely with FIMA Construction to achieve all project objectives:

  • BMS produced a special once off design to suit the 250 l/s max flow, 450 mm pipe sizes and head of water at the site.

  • BMS used its 30+ years of GRP Manufacturing experience to produce the special Stormbreaker Defender Vortex Separator in rot/corrosion proof GRP.

  • Full ISO Quality Checks were carried out the Defender.

  • The Separator had to have a very large diameter to accomdate the large flow. This necessiated a delivery as an oversized load during the night.

  • BMS also supplied a BMS PF3 Full Retention Interceptor (NSF 5.6 / Max Flow 5.6 l/s / 2,000 l Capacity & a 5 l/s Stormbrake Outlet Flow Control

Installation

The Stormbreaker Defender is ‘value engineered product’ that is delivered ‘ready to go’ and is simple to install for both new and existing applications.  Simply lower onto a base via the integral lifting hooks, connect the inlet & outlet pipes and install a 225 mm leanmix concrete surround.  A large separate concrete manhole is not required.  The maximum unit diameter is 2.3 m meaning that all sizes can be uniquely delivered via a standard truck or container.  Full installation instructions are available.

Design

The Stormbreaker Defender was developed by BMS in conjunction with the University of Galway with the support of Enterprise Ireland.  Extensive background research and full scale laboratory testing was conducted by an expert in the field of vortex dynamics resulting in a class leading ISO 9001:2015 Quality product fully manufactured and developed in Europe.  It has extensive background data verifying both its selection and performance.

Materials/Manufacture

All BMS Stormbreaker Defenders are custom manufactured in corrosion/rot proof GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester) using only CE marked materials and Lloyds rated resins in Ireland/EU under ISO 9001:2015 and have an expected lifespan of 50+ years.

Maintenance

The Stormbreaker Defender is very easy to maintain with all maintenance from ground level.  Full instructions are available.
