Case Study on Beaufort Institute Temporary WWTP DBO

Client: University College Cork

Address: Beaufort Institute/Centre for Marine & Renewable Energy (MaREI), Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork, Ireland.

Brief: To design, manufacture, install, commission and maintain a turnkey temporary 'all in one' BMS Blivet Package Sewage Treatment Plant, a temporary inlet pumping station and a permanent outlet pumping station & associated works.

BMS Design Details:  University College Cork in conjunction with iMERC developed the Beaufort Marine Research facility, located adjacent to the existing National Maritime College of Ireland in Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork.  As part of the development a temporary above ground package Wastewater Treatment Plant was required to treat the sanitary wastewater from the Beaufort facility for approximately a three year period until the new local authority sewage treatment plant was completed.  The effluent was being pumped up stream to a pump sump in an adjoining property before being pumped onto the local authority sewer.  A very strict outlet effluent standard was required from the Blivet.

A 100 PE BMS BL1000 Blivet Sewage Treatment System was selected for a number of reasons;

  • It is the most compact 'all in one' wastewater treatment system available.
  • It can free stand above ground with only a slab underneath.
  • It offers same day commissioning and easy decommissioning when required.
  • It generates no odour and is very quiet.
  • It has a proven worldwide track record and can achieve the very strict effluent standard.

BMS Construction/Installation Details:  The Main Contractor on site was JJ Rhatigan and the Consulting Engineers were Arup, Cork whom BMS worked closely with.  Civil works were by JJ Rhatigan with all plant, mechanical & electrical (M&E), installation and commissioning by BMS.  BMS supplied and installed 1 No. BMS BL1000 Blivet ‘all in one’ Package Sewage Treatment plant, a temporary inlet pump station and fitted a permanent outlet pumping station, with ductile iron fittings and a dual ultrasonic control, to prevent pumping if the up stream pump sump was full.  BMS also supplied complete high specification custom control panels all with GSM dial outs with remote access.  All pumps supplied and installed were by Jung Pumpen of Germany. BMS are the main Irish installers of June Pumpen.

BMS Operation/Maintenance Details: BMS provide a complete O&M service at the plant including sampling on the BMS Blivet and both pump sumps.  The standard of effluent being produced to date has been excellent.

Final Effluent Standard: BOD 20mg/L, SS 30mg/L, COD 125 mg/l, Ammonia (NH4) 5 mg/l, Total Nitrogen (N) 12 mg/l & Total Phosphate (P) 5 mg/l.
